A very proud day for Bury St Edmunds Golf Club as they win the Tolly Cobbold Cup 2013. The ‘Tolly’ is the premier golf competition for the handicap range of 10 and above. They defeated a very well prepared Ipswich team at Thorpeness Golf club.
As supporters of the golf club Frames Conservatories Direct pass on their heartfelt congratulations to the team led so well by Barry Storey aided by Kevin Farrel, you could see the nerves on Kevin’s face and he was only watching!
Watching from the sidelines was a nervy affair but watching Dave Mackie and Andy George play the 17th on the final round of the day will live with me for a long time. Dave tee’d off and no one knew where his ball had gone. So Andy played a provisional ball and subsequently drilled it off the course left. Thinking the hole was lost they preceded to walk up the fairway hoping to find Andy’s ball only for the bushes to start talking as they approached a thick gorse bush the bush shouted out what ball are you playing Dave. A Tileist 4 with blue markings, was Dave’s reply only for the bush who was actually Ben Coleman to declare it found. That left Andy with a seemingly impossible shot out of the middle of the bush, much merriment pursued as Andy was heard saying where the heck is the hole or at least words to that effect! He chipped out, Dave played a great shot onto the green and Andy sank a great putt to WIN the hole. Bury St Edmunds golfers seemingly don’t do giving up!
Cameron Macdonald and Glen Knott
Dave Mackie and Andy George
Adrian ‘Leggy Leggett and Michael Gee (a schoolboy, and a great up and coming golfer)
Colin Aves and Gary Clarke
Gary and Hannah run the Old Canon Brewery in town and I guess there might be a party in there tonight!
Well done lads it was a pleasure to watch!
